Unkept Promises

Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida

GIRE is a feminist organization, whose mission is to achieve a cultural transformation in Mexico through the demand for reproductive justice, from a human rights perspective.

The Simone de Beauvoir Leadership Institute and the Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida promote and celebrate the trajectory, struggle, and activism that domestic workers in Mexico have been engaged in for decades to gain recognition, access, and guarantee their rights. As a result, in addition to making significant achievements, they have also made visible both the barriers they face in asserting their rights and their main demands.

This research presents the main advances made, above all, by domestic workers’ movements and allied groups in recent decades, as well as the standards and criteria derived from international human rights instruments. It also highlights the obstacles to the implementation of this normative framework and current public policies. In it, space was provided for domestic workers to give an account, through their experiences, of the barriers that still prevail when it comes to guaranteeing their labor and reproductive rights, as well as the gaps that persist between what is established in the normative framework and reality.
