Abortion Under The Spotlight

Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida

GIRE is a feminist organization, whose mission is to achieve a cultural transformation in Mexico through the demand for reproductive justice, from a human rights perspective.

The Grupo de Información en Reproducción Elegida (GIRE) is a non-profit civil association founded in 1992 that, since its inception, has collected, systematized, and disseminated information on women’s reproductive rights within the framework of human rights. Access to safe and legal abortion is one of the issues for which GIRE has worked for more than 25 years.

In the management of abortion information, Mexican authorities have demonstrated a peculiar opacity. The lack of transparency is serious in itself, but the lack of complete, accurate, and accessible information on such a vital issue as women’s health is symptomatic of a state that puts women’s lives and liberty on the back burner.

The objectives of this report are: first, to offer, in the absence and/or deficiency of updated, systematized, and complete information on abortion in Mexico, a general overview of GIRE’s experience in obtaining public information; and second, to review the state of available information on the subject.

VIRK collaborated in the design and development of this site and the interactive data visualizations presented in it, with specialized information aimed at journalists and activists interested in researching and learning about the reality of abortion in Mexico from the perspective of transparency, access to information as well as open data.
